The Art Car and Houston have not exactly been unconnected in the past, as anyone who has a deep interest in Art Cars will happily tell you. In fact, the Art Car movement is almost umbilically linked to the city, with Houston being a home to the Art Car Museum and a parade all of its own. Although parades and galleries dedicated to the concept and the reality of art cars have sprung up in other places since Houston will always be, to many, the home of the Art Car.

So if you were to Google “Art Cars Houston” you would find a lot of entries about Houston’s fabulous art car history. It might pass you by that in February this year, the city was home to an Art Car project featuring one of the city’s foremost photographers, Danny Clark, and the spray-can artist Gonzo247. Clark had only wanted to buy an old car as a run-around for him and his family. Maybe add some black paint and some flame decals.

So what they did next was what anyone would do. They realised that they were about to create an Art Car, so they sold tickets to the actual painting of the car and turned it into a spectator event. The money went to a local art school, Roberts Elementary, which has been hugely influential on the art scene in Houston and has fed the talents and the dreams of countless contributors in the home of the Art Car.
