The Art Of The Car
2 Jun
We all enjoy looking at art cars and seeing the incredible results of the imagination of a unique individual. Whether the art car is an effort by Harrod Blank, or the brainchild of an unknown individual with a clever idea and the enthusiasm to put it into practice, the result can be startling and will always make passers by stop and stare. In fact, it is not beyond any of us to give it a try. All you need is an idea, the materials and the inclination to put it into practice, and a bit of time.
Getting the idea can be the trickiest part. Knowing what works in an art car helps. Some of the finest art cars have been the result of a few hours’ work with paints and brushes, or spray cans and stencils. Others have been made by adorning the car with found items of a specific kind. Harrod Blank, the godfather of the art car movement, created his camera van by attaching several cameras to the outside of a van and adding a few working video camera, making an interactive piece that is still highly thought of.
Taking inspiration from the greats – while not directly copying them – is often an excellent way of going about making your art car. The important thing is to get a concept nailed down first – a theme, such as “peace” or “consumerism” - and then think of how you can portray that. From there, the only limits are in your imagination.
