On the face of it, people who like cars and people who appreciate art may appear to be an unlikely set to actually get along and share ideas. The “gear head” fraternity are often characterised as being overly macho and conservative in their outlook while the art lovers of the world are usually the ones who will get the reputation for being more interested in pretty pictures than in machines built for speed and power. And yet, car art is where the two fraternities combine and find that they’ve actually got lots in common.

For many car enthusiasts, the greatest marque of all is Alfa Romeo. This is nothing to do with reliability or absolute technical excellence, as any Alfa driver will tell you. It has a lot more to do with the fact that Alfa Romeo has for a very long time been producing cars that would not look out of place in a gallery. The sleek lines and the effortless Italian style put Alfa at the front of the queue every single time.

When you think about it, there is something very clear that cars and art have in common. The importance of precision is paramount in both. Whether you are making or restoring a car, or putting together a painting, there is a fundamental importance to getting it absolutely right down to the last millimeter. Without this precision the whole thing fails – and becomes of less value than the sum of its parts in the process.
