Although the art car movement is a fairly decentralised entity – with hubs in many places including California and Arizona among others – there are many people who view Houston as the de facto home of the movement. Certainly, the presence in Houston of the world’s first Art Car museum curated by Ann and James Harithas makes it a very strong contender for the title. And the presence of an independent art car club is testament to the strong love of the art car in Houston, which is naturally also home to a major art car parade.

HACK – the Houston Art Car Klub – does not own any art cars, but is a hub around which the city’s many fans of the art car can gather. Its main role is to facilitate the support of the movement and to make it easier for people to secure the use of an art car for an event. The website of the organisation at http://www.houstonartcarklub.com carries a number of useful links as well as hosting discussion boards about the art car and a portfolio of art cars provided by members of the HACK.

On the discussion boards and on the main site you can read tributes to some of the stars of the movement who are sadly no longer with us, including Brian Bryan, Jeff Towns, Tom Jones and Tom Kennedy. It is a home for anyone who loves the art car, who enjoys the innate surrealism and fun of the movement and concept, and a rallying point for the movement itself.
