The Art Of The Car
3 Nov
For a lover of car art, the center of the universe is located in Los Angeles at the Petersen Automotive Museum. So named for the benefactors Margie and Robert Petersen, who founded the museum and have put $30 million of their own money into it, the Petersen Automotive Museum is home to some of the finest examples of the medium of car art, along with quite a few examples of the real thing. Covering an area of 300,000 square feet, it is quite simply hog heaven for the devotee of car art. Indeed the museum is home to an Art Wall featuring some of the finest works of car art imaginable and has featured work from the masters of the medium.
The art section of the Petersen Automotive Museum has housed some notable exhibitions and is set to house more as time goes on. At present visitors to the museum can witness the Sounds of Speed exhibition which features among other things a collection of car art themed album covers from bands and artists whose love of cars inspired album artwork, songs and even entire albums. Bands and artists such as the Beach Boys, Elvis and Dick Dale are all present on the wall, as well as some quite fascinating albums featuring a range of car sounds. Other exhibitions include the “What Were They Thinking?” nostalgia festival for awful cars – a kind of standing companion piece to the Concours d’Ignorance.
