The Art Of The Car
18 Nov
There is little doubt that depicting a car at its best is something that requires a major talent and can only be done by an artist with a real love of their muse. Generally it is felt that the best examples of car art are ones that show a car “at rest” in a peaceful scene – often with trees and bucolic scenery to express the almost lazy, luxurious feel of the finest automobiles – or racing scenes, where the savage battle of man and machine is fought out among crowds of excited fans. One way or the other, it is one thing to draw or sculpt a realistic depiction of a car, and another to recreate the emotions engendered by the real thing.
There are many who feel that sculpture is actually the most beneficial medium in which to show the class of an automobile, due to being in three dimensions and allowing a different look from every angle. In many ways, though, sculpture misses out on the scope for extraneous detail. Extraneous detail may be a bad thing in some cases, but in art it can be the thing that takes the depiction from very good to excellent.
Equally, the medium of sculpture can at least claim that it has the ability to bring the thing it depicts into the human world. Its three-dimensional appearance means that it can be exhibited a lot more prominently than a painting and give the viewer a greater interaction with the art. In truth, however, the finest medium is the one that most moves the viewer.
