The Art Of The Car
12 Dec
When we look at modern car art we tend to see that it is separated into three main categories – the race, where we see the cars in full flow or at the finish line with a victorious driver; the mid-period American muscle car; and the classic car from any era, which may be a 1931 Duesenberg or a 1970s Alfa Romeo. When car artists of the future look back on this era, however, what are they likely to depict? As we look at cars today, there are some critics who do not feel we are producing a single classic, feel that the racing drivers of the present age have made the sport dull, and that all the true greats have been depicted to death.
This is a disease familiar to anyone who has taken an interest in the art which has followed from their medium of choice. No art form is immune to it – find a music fan who has not bemoaned the absence of great bands or artists in the present day and you will find someone who has only been listening to music for a few months. In terms of the car, though, it is important that we are not too harsh on the present era. Cars at the moment are something that are simultaneously thoroughly modern and also historic. To do what has not yet been done takes a lot of thought and cannot be forced. We have some great cars just now; we just need the time to depict them.
