Creating an art car is something that must cross the mind of anyone who looks at the works created by others – if not immediately, then certainly after a while. It can be difficult to get the perfect idea, though – after all, it is not as though you can throw the first draft away if things go wrong. Conceptualizing a good idea and following it through to the finished product is something that takes a lot of psyching yourself up. But it does not need to be too much hard work. The whole philosophy behind the art car movement is one of relaxed, good-natured fun.

Do what paint-and-paper artists do when chasing inspiration for a painting. Think about issues which motivate you, or about people who inspire you. Any personal interests you have which border on obsession? Remember, you will be driving this around so it is no time to get shy about things. Sketching some ideas down on paper is a good idea, but not indispensable. If you are concerned that you suck at drawing then do not worry – in all likelihood making an art car will not involve much drawing. Gluing will often be more of a consideration – but play to your strengths and all will be well.
