The Art Of The Car
23 Mar
If someone wished to make a film about you, you would probably be at least a little bit flattered, no doubt. If it emerged that this process was going to take sixteen years, you would perhaps become a little bit perturbed. Nonetheless, David Silberberg took exactly that long to make a film documenting the life and career of his friend Harrod Blank. Given Harrod Blank’s proclivity for making films himself, it is interesting to see someone else’s perspective on him as an artist, a subject and a friend. Such is the idea behind Oh My God, It Is Harrod Blank. It is well worth watching, even if you have not the least interest in art cars. Harrod Blank is immensely good value to the viewer.
The film gives a look into Harrod’s youth – after all, it began filming when he was still a youth, and working for his filmmaker father Les Blank. It covers his epic voyage of self-discovery, his art cars, his film-making and his home remedies for hair loss. Yes, the last bit is true. That is Harrod Blank for you – it would not be him if it was not eccentric and individual. This is the man who brought us the Camera Van, after all.
